AMOROSO: Congress Must Continue Investing in Election Security
EDITORS NOTE: Denise Amoroso is a EBR Metro Councilwoman
The foundation of every representative government is public confidence in our elections. As a Metro Council member, I see firsthand how important it is that citizens trust the process that puts their elected officials in office. That confidence depends not only on strong election laws, but also on reliable, secure, and modern election infrastructure.

Louisiana is currently replacing voting machines that have faithfully served our state for more than three decades. Like any critical public infrastructure, these systems eventually reach the end of their useful life. Replacing them is not a luxury—it is a necessity to ensure our elections remain secure, accurate, and resilient against evolving cyber threats.
At the same time, local governments across Louisiana continue to face increasing financial pressures. Election administration is a statewide responsibility that benefits every community, and it should remain a partnership between the states and the federal government. Restoring $400 million for election infrastructure in the FY27 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act would help states like Louisiana complete essential modernization efforts without placing additional strain on local taxpayers.
Secure elections are not a partisan issue—they are an American priority. Every eligible voter deserves confidence that their ballot will be counted accurately and that the systems supporting our elections are prepared for the challenges of today and tomorrow.
I encourage our congressional delegation to continue supporting investments that strengthen election security and preserve the integrity of the democratic process for future generations.
