Congresswoman Julia Letlow is one step closer to becoming Louisiana’s next United States Senator after a decisive victory in Saturday’s Republican runoff election.

With President Donald Trump’s endorsement and strong support across the state, Letlow defeated State Treasurer John Fleming to secure the Republican nomination for the seat being vacated by Sen. Bill Cassidy. She won with approximately 57% of the vote, carrying much of the state and further cementing her status as the dominant force in Louisiana Republican politics.

Letlow entered the race as the clear favorite after Trump encouraged her candidacy and quickly consolidated support from Republican elected officials, donors, and grassroots activists. Her victory follows a May primary in which incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy failed to advance after years of political fallout stemming from his vote to convict Trump during the former president’s second impeachment trial.

Polling throughout the campaign consistently showed Letlow with a commanding advantage, and the final results reflected that momentum. Her campaign successfully united much of the Republican coalition, while Fleming was unable to overcome her statewide organization and Trump’s endorsement.

Letlow will now face Democrat Jamie Davis in the November general election, where Republicans view her as the overwhelming favorite in a state that has become increasingly red over the past two decades. If elected, Letlow would become the first Republican woman to represent Louisiana in the United States Senate.

With the primary now behind her, attention shifts to November, but barring a major political surprise, Julia Letlow appears well-positioned to become Louisiana’s newest U.S. Senator.
